Penis pumps are devices that use a vacuum effect to draw blood into the erectile tissue of the penis. They offer a non-invasive way to help men with erectile dysfunction get an erection which, when combined with a cock ring, may allow them to have penetrative sex. Men of all ages can use a penis pump to provide a temporary amount of extra firmness, length and/or girth to their penis.
A penis pump consists of three parts: a cylindrical chamber, a sleeve at the base to create an airtight seal and a pump attachment to remove air from the cylinder, creating a vacuum effect. They come in a range of sizes and styles; most use air to create negative pressure but some use water, some are manually operated with a bulb, lever or handle and some are powered. There are also models which combine extra stimulation through different textures, movements or vibration.
Especially in the case of those who experience erectile dysfunction, it’s a good idea to use a pump in conjunction with a cock ring. While the pump draws blood into the penis, putting a cock ring on immediately after pumping may help slow the blood flowing back out, allowing you to maintain the erection for longer. If the ring you’re using is stretchy enough, you can put around base of the ump cylinder before you start to make it easier to apply it to the base of the penis before releasing the vacuum after you finish pumping. When using a cock ring, it’s really important to not leave it on for more than 20-30 minutes at a time.

Things to consider when selecting a penis pump
Size and shape
It’s important to consider the length and girth of your penis when erect when selecting a pump. Pumps that are too small may be uncomfortable and ineffective. We recommend choosing a pump with a cylinder at least an inch longer than your penis when erect.
Style
Hand powered pumps give you great control but require more effort than powered ones. It’s important when selecting a pump to choose one with a release valve which will allow you to quickly reverse the suction effect and remove the pump in the case of pain or discomfort developing.
Tips for using a pump
- We recommend reading the instructions that come with each pump before use as they all are a little different but here are some general tips for using a penis pump
- Apply some lube to the base of your penis before use to stop any irritation to the skin from the sleeve and enhance the vacuum seal. Choose a lube that’s compatible with the material the sleeve is made of; if unsure, water based lube is always a safe option. It’s also a good idea to consider shaving your pubic hair around the base of your penis as it may help you get a stronger vacuum seal.
- Start pumping slowly and be aware of any pain or discomfort that may arise. If it starts to hurt, stop immediately. It usually takes between 30 second and a few minutes for men to achieve an erection through using a pump.
- Some men report a small amount of bruising or pain at the base of the penis when they first start using a pump which generally resolves quite quickly. If you’re concerned about this or any other effects from using a pump, we recommend stopping use and speaking to your doctor.
- While using a penis pump is considered to be a safe way to get an erection for people with erectile dysfunction, if you take blood thinning medications or have underlying heart, blood clotting, urinary or prostate health conditions, we recommend speaking to your doctor before you use a pump just to check that it’s OK for you.
- While some men have reported that regular use of a pump can result in a sustained increase in penis size and girth, for most men the results are temporary and last for about 30 minutes after use.
- Men with erectile dysfunction who get an erection from using a pump may find that the erection looks and feels different from a naturally occurring erection in terms of sensation, warmth, colour and size. After using a pump, the penis can appear purplish in colour and feel colder to the touch than before.
- As with all adult toys, hygiene and cleanliness are important. After using a pump, wash it with warm water and a quality toy cleaner then allow to dry completely before storing it somewhere safe and dry.
